A pioneer of medical rehabilitation
Jimmy Sommerville became a squadron leader in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve during the second world war and worked with Dr Jamie O'Malley. Because the cost of training aircrew was so high it was economically sensible to put resources into getting them fit to fly again as quickly as possible. After the war Jamie O'Malley decided to use similar techniques to rehabilitate civilians to get them back to work speedily after injury.
