GMC gives evidence to inquiry
In this news article (7 May, p 1044) we made two errors. We said
that the Shipman report called for a lay majority on the General Medical Council.
In fact Dame Janet Smith supported the medical majority on the GMC but did not
want all medical members to be elected. She did not think it was appropriate
that the GMC be dominated by elected members.
Secondly, we said that Professor Sir Graeme Catto, president of
the GMC, supported Dame Janet’s recommendation that when GPs sought
revalidation their folders should contain, among other things, “a certificate
to show successful completion of a knowledge test.” The GMC does not believe
that GP folders need contain such a certificate.
We apologise for these errors.
