William Henry Moffatt
Former consultant physician Greenisland and Whiteabbey hospitals (b 1926;
q Queen’s University, Belfast, 1950; FRCPI 1956), died from liver cancer
on 27 November 2004.
Bill undertook national service with the Royal Army Medical Corps, serving
in the Suez Canal zone. After working in various hospitals including Doncaster,
Cheltenham, and Bournemouth he returned to Northern Ireland as consultant
physician in geriatric medicine.
In his working life and in retirement he was extremely active, holding
the positions of director ofthe Northern Ireland Advisory Service,
chairman of the University of Ulster’s ethical committee, member of Northern
Health Board, trustee of Leopardstown Trust, Dublin, member of the War Pensions
Committee and the Belfast Charitable Society.
He was awarded the OBE in 1987 and was appointed justice of the peace
in 1977.
He leaves a wife, Elsie; three children; and four grandchildren. [D
