Tim Cullinan
Former general practitioner Willesborough, Kent, and consultant in environmental
medicine St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, and in many parts of Africa (b
1932; q Cambridge/Guy’s Hospital, London, 1957; MD, MRCOG), died from secondary
prostate cancer on 25 May 2004.
After house jobs Tim spent three years in Uganda; on his return he sat
the MRCOG examination and was awarded the gold medal, but elected to go into
general practice. Some years later he joined the consultant staff (like his
father and grandfather before him) at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, and developed
the teaching of community medicine. An unconventional consultant, he cycled
to work, dressed informally, and was popular with students. His later years
were spent in Africa, notably in Malawi, where he established a department
of community medicine in a new medical school. After his official retirement
he was involved in charitable projects in the control of tuberculosis in
Siberia and Georgia. He leaves a wife, five children, and 17 grandchildren.
