Psychiatrist suspended for certifying women insane: The government of Uttar Pradesh, India, has suspended Dr S K Gupta, a psychiatrist at the Agra Mental Hospital, who was exposed by an Indian investigative website, Tehelka, as having allegedly taken bribes for certifying women as insane so that their husbands could get an easy divorce from them.

New NHS foundation trusts announced: Ten new NHS foundation trusts—which have quasi-independent status—have been set up. They include major teaching hospitals such as Guy's and St Thomas's and University College, in London, and Papworth in Cambridge, a leading cardiac centre. TIA patients need assessment: Patients who have a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) should be assessed and investigated in a specialist service as soon as possible within seven days of the incident, say the latest, revised guidelines from the Royal College of Physicians. Rabies in organ recipients: Last month the kidneys and liver of a man from the US state of Arkansas who died of a presumptive subarachnoid haemorrhage were transplanted into two women and a man. The recipients subsequently died of rabies, proved by the histopathological examination of central nervous tissues (http://www.cdc.gov/).

Academy wins five year funding deal: The Department of Health is to provide a five year “grant in aid” to meet the core running costs of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Its total value will be £1.75m ($3.2m; €2.6m). The academy, an independent body, was established in 1998 to promote medical science across traditional disciplinary boundaries, including clinical academic medicine, veterinary science, dentistry, laboratory science, and medical and nursing care.
