I'm starting a GP vocational training scheme in August. I opted for a flexible training post when I applied, but now I want to go for full time training. How do I go about it?

Congratulations on your appointment. This shouldn't be insurmountable, but you need to talk to some people quickly. Your first port of call should be the course organiser (sometimes known as the programme director) for your scheme. They should be able to discuss your changed circumstances with you and advise you as to the likelihood of being able to change your posts to a full time basis. They will need to negotiate with the various consultants on your behalf, and this may take some time—hence the need for speed. A face to face meeting will probably be more helpful than trying to sort it all out on the phone or via email.

Another call you may need to make (and your course organiser should know about this) is to the director of general practitioner (GP) education at your deanery. The deanery will be funding a large proportion of your salary and will need to make provision for your additional hours.

Something of a financial crisis has hit GP education across the United Kingdom in the past few weeks. The NHS has savagely (and unexpectedly) cut GP training budgets, and a number of posts are in question. We hope that this is being remedied, but it is certainly a difficult time for deaneries. This may not concern you, but you need to find out what, if any, effect it will have on your plans.
