Rapid responses are electronic comments to the editor. They enable our users
to debate issues raised in articles published on bmj.com. A rapid response
is first posted online. If you need the URL (web address) of an individual
response, simply click on the response headline and copy the URL from the
browser window. A proportion of responses will, after editing, be published
online and in the print journal as letters, which are indexed in PubMed.
Rapid responses are not indexed in PubMed and they are not journal articles.
The BMJ reserves the right to remove responses which are being
wilfully misrepresented as published articles or when it is brought to our
attention that a response spreads misinformation.
From March 2022, the word limit for rapid responses will be 600 words not
including references and author details. We will no longer post responses
that exceed this limit.
The word limit for letters selected from posted responses remains 300 words.
By the time all these working hours arguments are sorted the number
of doctors choosing a career in hospital will dwindle; whichever
government is around at that time will spend £200 - 300 million of the
taxpayers' money on a recruitment drive; the small number of doctors with
a voice, if any, will object to the recruitment of foreign
doctors/services. Those already working will get only half their former
salary because of the EWTD; those doing full-time sessional work, even if
they opt to do on-call work cannot do so for more than 12-14 hrs per week
(minimum 2 hrs spend on commute, if doing locum service)...and so will
evolve this saga.
Now look at a well respected and earning member of the plumbing trade
- no limits on number of working hours; you can be on-call for an
agency/insurance company/or whatever and still do some moonlighting on the
side; u get paid for both. You may get sick as many times as you want. You
may take as much annual leave as you want. You do not have to pay annual
fees for the GMC/BMA/MPS/MDU/RCOG/RCP/RCS/BAUS/BAOS/BAPS/etc. If you are
industrious, you will make about the same money as a consultant in his
20th year of service (after his usual award of all the points talked about
but never received). And, most important of all, if you are a plumber, you
are VALUED by your customer and manager alike! And, you don't have to be
revalidated to continue practising your trade.
Makes me think very hard.....dang it, my pension's not quite ready
yet!
