Rapid responses are electronic comments to the editor. They enable our users
to debate issues raised in articles published on bmj.com. A rapid response
is first posted online. If you need the URL (web address) of an individual
response, simply click on the response headline and copy the URL from the
browser window. A proportion of responses will, after editing, be published
online and in the print journal as letters, which are indexed in PubMed.
Rapid responses are not indexed in PubMed and they are not journal articles.
The BMJ reserves the right to remove responses which are being
wilfully misrepresented as published articles or when it is brought to our
attention that a response spreads misinformation.
From March 2022, the word limit for rapid responses will be 600 words not
including references and author details. We will no longer post responses
that exceed this limit.
The word limit for letters selected from posted responses remains 300 words.
This report tells us that 'assertive outreach teams and crisis
resolution teams have the ability to revolutionise the whole system of
mental health care in a locality. They can change not only the structures
of the services but the cultures and the attitudes in them.'
As a psychologist working mainly with children, it seems we are
living in an alternative planetary system to the places where these teams
operate. Whilst it is accepted that the teams deal with severe mental
illness, it seems to me staggering and mind blowing that whilst others in
the adult system are advancing their understanding of the needs of
individuals, those working with children are back pedalling and right now
have reached the middle ages.
I say this because, not only are the most palpably obvious cases of
vaccine damage in children being ignored, dismissed or blamed on parents,
in some cases locking them up for life, but formerly recognised conditions
are being morphed and twisted into nothing - because there are no
appropriate services for them - with parents set up to blame if they don't
accept that. `We don't see that in your son, Mrs Jones` `We need to
examine what's going on at home` `You have a need for your child to be
ill` `The problem's with you` say these increasing armies of people
working in education who are forced to play at being psychoanalysts and
punitive mind benders, as they have nothing to offer the child and at
least had a dogmatic day's training on MSBP.
Diagnoses from Teaching hospitals are being `taken away` with OCD
replacing autism in some cases known to me. This has the effect of denying
the child support for the autistic problems, whilst paying professional
lip service to all the repetitive and rigid behaviours, and when the
inevitable breakdown occurs, points them toward the poorly resourced
psychiatric services, despite all our years of increasing awareness that
appropriate specialist education is the single best prevention for mental
breakdown in adolescence for this group.
Social workers rightly complain that they have no support from Health
services in either diagnoses - where they say they `sit on the fence` - or
interventions. The fast growing Asperger group aged 14 - 16 causing
enormous current problems. The system is swamped with children suffering
from neurodevelopmental problems which are being denied - even when
parents have secured support through the Special Education and Disability
Tribunals. Blaming and frightening parents into thinking their children
will be removed seems to have replaced pragmatism and knowledge which is
not rocket science - but does cost MONEY.
Without any understanding or specialist support for the conditions
which they are actually facing, punitive parent blame theories brought in
instead, we are heading for disaster. These problems will not go away, no
matter how draconian the interventions, no matter how much those who speak
out are vilified and no matter how much those who don't are rewarded with
grants, promotions. peerages and Knighthoods and black tie do's where they
can all pretend they are doing a great job.
The new Childrens bill will undoubtedly put more pressure on social
workers and EWO's to use smoke and mirrors methodologies in school
systems.
These problems will not go away, yes the children will outgrow the
denying school system - but then they will end up in the adult system.
Perhaps we should be grateful that these teams will be there to help
the victims limp through the rest of their lives - but why are the
appropriate services being denied to the children in order to prevent
massive problems later? Who worked this out and why?
What about the children?
