- Richard Hefin Trefor Jones
Consultant paediatrician Bridgend 1972-2000 (b Penrhyndeudraeth, Meirionydd, 22 June 1934; q Liverpool 1958; FRCPCH, FRCP Canada, FRCP London, DCH), died from a myocardial infarction on 3 May 2003.After qualification Trefor undertook national service in Canada. He then returned to Wales as paediatric registrar at Bangor with Gwyn Griffiths. There followed a spell as research fellow at Alder Hey before he returned to Canada as associate professor of paediatrics, University of Saskatchewan, for seven years.
He returned again to Wales in 1972 as the first consultant paediatrician based at Bridgend. Initially this was at Bridgend General Hospital and then at the Princess of Wales Hospital. He remained singlehanded for the first seven years. He started to lay the foundations of a modern paediatric department, which remains as his true memorial.
Trefor was the quintessential clinical paediatrician with a very easy and effective rapport with children and their families, as well as with colleagues.
He entered the Welsh paediatric scene enthusiastically, being a founder member of the Welsh Paediatric Society and later both secretary and president.
He also participated in the general affairs of the hospital, being secretary of the medical senior staff committee and later unit medical representative. He served as medical director of the Bridgend and District NHS Trust for all of its six years in existence.
He retired in 2000.
Away from medicine family, golf, travelling, and good food and wine were major interests.
He leaves a wife, Peggy, and three daughters and their families. [Philip Edwards, John Kirkby]
