New slimmed down GMC takes shape

    Fourteen of the elected medical members of the General Medical Council were re-elected last week on to the new, slimmed down GMC, which will come into being on 1 July. Five new members were also elected.

    In the biggest reform of the UK medical regulatory body since its establishment in 1858, membership of the council will drop from the current 104 members to 35, and the proportion of lay members will go up from 24% to 40%.
