Euro MPs threaten UK stem cell research

The European parliament took the first steps last week towards the introduction of a union-wide ban on embryonic stem cell research that would mean the end of various research projects now under way in the United Kingdom.
The UK research projects were made possible—subject to strict conditions—by an act of parliament passed by Westminster in December 2000, which extended the use of embryonic stem cell research to treatments for serious diseases.
