A consultant surgeon who was struck off by the General Medical Council has been reinstated after successfully appealing to the Privy Council, claiming that procedural irregularities had denied him a fair hearing.
Steven Walker, who worked at Blackpool Victoria Hospital from 1995 to 1998, was struck off after a series of mismanaged operations left five patients dead from bleeding (BMJ 2001;323:652).
He is the third doctor since the beginning of 2002 to have successfully appealed to the Privy Council against a finding of the GMC.
