In September 2002 the US Preventive Services Task Force
issued new guidelines on screening for osteoporosis, recommending that
routine screening begin at age 65 (age 60 for women at increased risk for
osteoporosis). The group identified bone density measured at the femoral
neck by dual-energy x ray absorptiometry as the best predictor of hip fracture.
