Mark Jensen Ballantyne
Specialist registrar in gastroenterology Southampton General Hospital, Southampton (b 1972; q Dundee 1996), d 23 June 2002.
Mark Ballantyne died after a short illness of nine months. Although only in his second year as a specialist registrar in gastroenterology,
he had already established himself as one of the bright stars of the future. He was someone who lived life to the full. While
at medical school, not only did he do an intercalated BSc, but he also had a major interest outside work. He had at school
been a leading junior at golf, having played for his county, and at university he was captain of the medical school football
team and played for the university, an interest he returned to while an SHO in Nottingham. He was involved with Nottingham
Amateur Premier League Football Association and maintained his passion for football through his career. These activities,
his passion for life, and his evident relish of the practice of medicine were features that enthused all who worked with him.
He was one of those colleagues for whom nothing was too much trouble and who was always willing to share his time and help
with others. He was liked by all who worked with him and it was a privilege to have known him. [Colin L Smith]
