Norman Leonard Paros
Naomi Davis
General practitioner Colchester, Essex (b London 1923; q Queens’ College, Cambridge/St Bartholomew’s Hospital 1946; FRCGP, DObst RCOG, Cert AvMed, KStJ), d 16 April 2002.
Norman began his career in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He served on troopships from 1947 to 1949 and was at the withdrawal from Palestine and India. He also saw service in the Malaya emergency.
He married Margaret in 1955 and had two daughters, Jane and Alison. He was recalled to the 15th Field Ambulance for the Suez campaign of 1956.
His general practice in Colchester still operates out of his old home and his attachment was such that he still did the odd locum up to a week before his death. He initiated GP vocational training in Colchester. Through the St John Ambulance and the British Aeromedical Practitioners Association he combined medicine with his love of travel. Further combining his many interests, he was a cruise ship doctor, and did public duties at Wimbledon and Lords.
He was appointed president of Colchester Medical Society, the Essex branch of the BMA, and the Rotary Club of Colchester. He was also provost of the Essex faculty of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and county surgeon, Essex.
He was a life fellow of the RCGP and knight commander of the Order of St John.
His involvement in the St Petersburg Healthcare Trust occasioned many visits and brought longlasting friendships.
In addition to his frequent trips to the four corners of the world, he was a regular attender at theatres, art galleries, cricket matches, and point to points.
He justifiably was respected by all who knew him and, as the life and soul of any gathering, he was popular both in his social and working life.
He is survived by his daughter Jane.
