David Triffitt has found that art--an interest developed from an early age--helps to break down the barriers in his role as a general practitioner

Since I was about 12 years old, I always wanted to have my own art gallery. Sadly, I never realised my ambition to skulk moodily around a fine art degree and instead went to medical school and had a fantastic time. Around the time that my peers were discussing rotations, jobs, and postgraduate qualifications, however, I couldn't help thinking, “So when do I get some time for me?” It all seemed rather daunting and serious.

I did my senior house officer jobs and then went on a Raleigh International expedition to Guyana in South America. I was there primarily as the medic looking after a group of 12 people …
