Bernard Dudley
Associate specialist in medicine John Coupland Hospital, Gainsborough, and diabetic clinic Lincoln County Hospital 1970-84 (b Manchester 1924; q Manchester 1952), died following brain stem strokes on 4 April 2002.
Bernard started his career with a house job in Manchester, followed by post of medical registrar in Macclesfield before becoming a medical officer for the National Coal Board. He then became a general practitioner in Gainsborough from 1960 to 1970. Unhappy with general practice he took the opportunity to become an associate specialist at the John Coupland Hospital. Throughout his career he took a great interest in diabetes and contributed with advice, and support in the setting up of the Gainsborough branch of Diabetes UK. He retired to Skipton, in north Yorkshire, in 1984, bringing himself and his wife, Dorothy (formerly nursing sister in plastic surgery at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead), within easy reach of the dales and lakeland fells which they had walked for many years. For eight years, while semi-retired, he worked as a diabetic specialist at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield, and also lectured in geology for the U3A. Widowed in 1994, he leaves a son and two daughters and two grandchildren.
In addition to his medical career he was very active in local politics (for the Liberal Democrats) for many years. He was also a prominent member of the Barbirolli society and was chairman of the Skipton Mechanics. He had a keen interest in cricket, having played as a wicket keeper at Manchester Grammar School.
