Rapid responses are electronic comments to the editor. They enable our users
to debate issues raised in articles published on bmj.com. A rapid response
is first posted online. If you need the URL (web address) of an individual
response, simply click on the response headline and copy the URL from the
browser window. A proportion of responses will, after editing, be published
online and in the print journal as letters, which are indexed in PubMed.
Rapid responses are not indexed in PubMed and they are not journal articles.
The BMJ reserves the right to remove responses which are being
wilfully misrepresented as published articles or when it is brought to our
attention that a response spreads misinformation.
From March 2022, the word limit for rapid responses will be 600 words not
including references and author details. We will no longer post responses
that exceed this limit.
The word limit for letters selected from posted responses remains 300 words.
I was puzzled when I read "up until the attachment stage, the embryo
is not attached in any way to the woman herself". How could this be?
When someone in such an early stage of pregnancy stands up, does the
embryos remain in the chair? If the embryo is not attached in any way
whats to stop it falling to the ground?
It saddened my heart to see that such an arbitrary line could be
drawn about when a human life begins. Life starts the second there is
potential for a darling child. The title of the article used the term
"emergency" about birth control. A true emergency is when the mother's
life is at stake. An emergency is not a situation where someone throws
caution to the wind, knowing that sex results in conception, and lustfully
and irresponsibly goes ahead with no forthought to the consequences.
I lost a child through a tragic accident. The very thought that
someone would chose to kill their own child or to the potential child of a
patient sickens me. I don't approach this topic with anger but rather
with sadness and incomprehension of what drives people to such a course
of action.
