Elizabeth Joan Harbott (née Bowen)
Former associate specialist department of psychiatry Royal South Hants Hospital, Southampton (b Carmarthen 1933; q Cardiff 1957; MRCPsych, DPM), died at home from metastatic choroidal melanoma on 28 May 2001.
Following qualification, Joan worked in casualty and other hospital posts in Cardiff and Swansea, and then in her hometown of Carmarthen, preparing to enter general practice in West Wales.
She had been exclusively Welsh speaking until she was 8 years old and the arrival of English evacuees. She was extremely proud of her Welsh heritage throughout her life. However, in 1963 she felt the urge to spread her wings and successfully applied for a fellowship in internal medicine at the George Washington University Hospital in Washington DC. Her year in the States was a wonderful experience, which expanded her awareness of the scope of medicine and of her own abilities.
On her return to the United Kingdom she decided to train in psychiatry, first at Brookwood Hospital, where she obtained the DPM in 1967, soon after her marriage. She moved with her husband to Winchester in 1969, and took up a post in the new department of psychiatry at Southampton, where she qualified MRCPsych soon afterwards. She continued to work in the department as an associate specialist until she retired in 1991. Joan was much loved by patients and staff for her devoted work with longstay and chronic patients.
After retirement she had time to enjoy painting, travelling, gardening, and sailing with her husband. She leaves a husband, Tony, and a son. [Tony Harbott]
