Two doctors accused of running a faulty breast screening service have been found culpable of providing substandard care in failing to diagnose breast cancer in dozens of women with signs of the disease.
Dr John Brennan and Dr Graham Wylie Urquhart were accused of serious professional misconduct in their work at the east Devon breast screening service between 1991 and 1997. After losing one of the longest running cases ever heard by the professional conduct committee of the General Medical Council, the two doctors were awaiting a decision, as the BMJ went to press, on what disciplinary action the council would take.
