Betty Sizemore lives in Kansas and works in a diner. Her husband Del is a car salesman and is having an affair with his secretary. He treats Betty badly and she retreats into an inner life focused on the plot of a TV soap opera. She thinks she is in love with the soap's central character, Doctor David Ravell.
From these unremarkable beginnings this accomplished film catapults its heroine into a hugely entertaining, yet subtle and thought provoking journey across western America, culminating in Hollywood. …
