German hospital may face prosecution after publishing a research letter

A German university hospital is facing the threat of prosecution for negligent manslaughter after paediatricians from the hospital published a research letter in the Lancet (2000;356:310) reporting details of an outbreak of klebsiella infection in its neonatal intensive care unit.
The paediatricians and the hospital feel that they are being unjustly treated for their “clinical and scientific honesty” in writing up the case.
