When I went to York in 1959 I was the only ear, nose, and throat surgeon and the first appointment of a consultant in any specialty for many years. As a result my wife and I were frequently invited out in order to be inspected and to join in the warm social intercourse that the relatively small number of consultants and general practitioners enjoyed.
