Modernise the NHS in small steps, say experts

    The best way to expedite the modernisation of the NHS is not by issuing more national directives but by allowing clinicians, nurses, and managers who work together to forge local initiatives that improve the delivery of their services.

    Speakers at a forum on quality in health care last week agreed that harnessing local commitment to patients' welfare and encouraging those with new ideas to test them out would drive the new NHS agenda forward.
