EDITOR—After the publication of our paper in the BMJ of 29 May on why mortality from heart disease is low in France (the French paradox),1 it was drawn to our attention that the time lag explanation that we set out in our paper had previously been put forward, by Marion Nestle, in a letter to the Lancet in 1992.2 Wex were not aware of this attribution, and we would have cited it if we had been.
