The number of readmissions to hospital in children with asthma in Denmark fell by half from 1978 to 1993, leading the authors to conclude that management of chronic asthma has probably improved. Bisgaard and Møller (p 229) analysed data on hospital admissions and readmissions (at least a year after first admission) for asthma in children aged 5-14 at first admission They found that the rate of first admission for asthma was constant at about 1 per 1000 children per year but that the relative risk of readmission gradually decreased. Length of stay for all asthma admissions also fell.
