Surgeons in the United States are generally trained in less time than their British counterparts, but a recent survey of “leading senior surgeons” suggests that a substantial body of opinion there favours broader and longer training too (Arch Surg 1998;133:900-5). Most made their career choices in early residency, but believed they acquired most expertise at assistant professor level.
