Occupational physicians seem to be a contented bunch. A recent survey (Occupational Health Review: Sep/Oct 1998:19-18) found more than two thirds were satisfied or very satisfied in their present jobs, were facing sufficient challenges to maintain their interest in work, and were valued by others (financially to the tune of a median salary of £54 000). Once you're there it's rather a flat career structure: easy to move sideways, but rather less easy to rise further through management ranks to captain of industry.
