“All posts should have sufficient formal and informal teaching in protected time and a named educational supervisor responsible for ensuring formative assessment occurs.” The recommendations of the body responsible for the monitoring of training for general practice, the Joint Committee on Postgraduate Training for General Practice, set high standards for training posts in the specialty: and the passage of the new general practice regulations earlier this year means that these are standards with teeth. The JCPTGP has so far threatened removal of accreditation from just one department, with dramatic effect: the incumbent consultant is to be replaced by two others, and a much higher priority given to training.
