Fears of a brain-drain in Canadian surgery are receding: production of newly-qualified surgeons is matching emigration to the States and retirement (Can J Surg 1998;41:198-204). The average resident takes 60 months to train, and the pass rates in the College exams exceed 80%. The article also spins the high morale message that 41% of surgeons intend to retire at age 70; there are no gender data anywhere to be seen.
