Former consultant plastic surgeon Canniesburn Hospital (b Glasgow 1921; q Glasgow 1944 (commendation); ChM, FRCS), d 13 April 1998. He served in the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1945-8 in Egypt, Palestine, and Somaliland. His postgraduate training began with a year in the anatomy department, and a love of anatomical detail remained with him. Director of Canniesburn Hospital from 1980 to 1986, he contributed largely to its eminence as an international centre of excellence for plastic surgical care and training. He received numerous international honours, in 1984-6 was president of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, and in 1979 was president of the British Association of Plastic Surgeons. His book Fundamental Techniques in Plastic Surgery, first published in 1960, is now in its 9th edition—a recent review suggested that a copy should be fixed to the wall of every accident and emergency department in the land.
