Active management reduces bleeding in third stage of labour

Active rather than expectant management is the preferred treatment for the third stage of labour, according to the latest trial comparing the techniques in which midwives were skilled in both approaches.
Hospitals should recommend active management in their clinical guidelines, conclude the authors, although they should also ensure that midwives are trained in expectant management to allow women a choice of approaches (Lancet 1998;351:693-9). Active management involves giving …
