General practitioner Limekilns, Fife, 1988-97 (b 1961; q Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland 1985; MRCGP), died of a cervical chordoma on 7 October 1997. He came from a distinguished family: his father is a consultant pathologist, his grandfather was master of the Coombe Hospital, Dublin, and his great grandfather was the first governor general of Ireland. After house jobs he and his wife did voluntary jobs in Peru, before going for general practice training to Limekilns, where he became a partner in 1990. With his humanity and ability to relate to people, he was an integral part of the local community, and he lived his life with vigour and enthusiasm. Golf was the chief of his many sporting interests, but he loved wine and travel and supplemented his salary at a weekly card school. He leaves a wife, Jane, and three sons.
