With a travelling fellowship to the Mayo Clinic he did research into bladder radio implants in spinal injuries, which led to a lifelong interest in urology. In west Lancashire his earlier teaching interests continued, and he became the postgraduate clinical tutor (working tirelessly to establish a new centre and library), served on the district health authority, and was president of the local BMA division for several years. His lifetime leisure interest was golf. He started to play aged 7 and at his peak achieved a handicap of 2, being champion of Glasgow Golf Club in 1967. During national service he tutored the previously unremarkable RAMC team so well that it won the Army Trophy for the first time.
