A new national framework for assessing preregistration house officers (PRHOs) has been proposed by the Association for the Study of Medical Education. The aim is to make the PRHO year a more fulfilling and effective training experience. It was agreed that a national model learning and service contract should be drawn up by postgraduate medical deans in consultation with NHS trusts and the BMA and that all educational supervisors should have had formal training for their role by August 1999.
