Although the concepts that underlie performance related pay seem simple enough, in practice schemes have been difficult to operate. According to a report by the NHS-owned consultancy Pay and Workforce Research, many organisations are abandoning or making major modifications to their schemes. The schemes can prove divisive when so many activities depend on the successful operation of teams. Two solutions are 360 degree appraisalÑin which subordinates and peers also feed into the assessment processÑand team based pay. Copies of the report are available on 01423 842637.
