It's good news that Isobel Allen's work has found little hard evidence that young doctors are leaving the profession in droves, but, as she told a conference last week (BMJ 1997;314:1697), it was worrying that so many were disillusioned and could soon be voting with their feet if the government and the profession's leaders did not heed them. And the chairman of the General Medical Council's education committee, Professor Charles George, told medical academics at their conference that the position for some preregistration house officers was dire with poor accommodation and little supervision.
