Inclusion on the GMC's specialist register will be compulsory for candidates for substantive consultant posts from 1 January 1997, so staff grade doctors who may be eligible for entry should act quickly to verify their status. Staff grades who have trained to a level equivalent to consultant in Britain or overseas should write to the college which oversees their specialty, enclosing a full CV that outlines experience, posts held, and evidence of specialist qualifications. The college or faculty concerned may charge a fee for the assessment. If the application is not accepted it may be that additional appropriate training - completed before 31 December 1997 - will facilitate entry to the register. The only route after that will be to enter the specialist registrar grade.
