The number of doctors and dentists in England has risen by 19% over the past ten years, according to the Department of Health's most recent Statistical Bulletin. Hospital medical staff increased 27% since 1985, with the 3.2% average annual growth in the number of consultants outstripping the 2.3% growth rate in the number of juniors.
