EDITOR,—I was trained in general surgery in Britain and then spent 10 years training surgical residents in the United States. Having observed the results of this method for the past 15 years in private surgical practice, I can vouch for the fact that it is possible to train bright medical graduates to a high standard of specialist competence in adefined period.1
