The incidence of this condition is unknown, and the incidence of patients who require treatment is even less certain. Suffice to say that it is rare. Incidence and prevalence rates for the individual patient are unimportant, however, when their lives are being disrupted sufficiently to need effective treatment. The authors have quite rightly adopted a “conservative” approach to this patient's digestive problem and have reported some unusual as well as standard medical treatments, including the most valued “tincture of time.”
