New medical bill could tackle education

Legislation to protect patients in Britain from doctors who perform badly is likely to be shelved for another year. Instead of a bill being introduced this autumn, the NHS Executive now gives October 1995 as the target date for amending the 1983 Medical Act. The amendments will give the General Medical Council (GMC) statutory powers to deal with incompetent doctors whose performance does not amount to serious professional misconduct.
But the planned new bill will go beyond the original GMC proposals. It will also implement changes in medical education …
