    After the Christmas parties, the gynae clinic. The 1994 diary is cracked open for the first urgent cases of the new year. My weekly operating list is on a Monday and the bank holidays have wrought their usual havoc with the theatre schedules. Still, the post-festive terminations have to be fitted in somehow.

    Year after year, this traditional scene doesn't change.
