Joseph Douress

Sales and Marketing Director

Joe builds high performing, passionate teams that are focused on delivering demonstrable and sustainable value to customers. Prior to joining BMJ, Joe held senior roles with Dun & Bradstreet, LexisNexis, and Elsevier Health Sciences. While at LexisNexis, he developed Board Certified Docs in partnership with the American Board of Medical Specialties. Joe is the founder of The Heroes Tournament, which has donated more than $500,000 to benefit children with cancer. He earned a BA with honors from William Paterson University and attended graduate school at Rider University. He and his wife, Maureen, have four children.

Cheryl Shechtman

Business Manager

Cheryl joined BMJ Americas in October 2014 as Business Manager. Prior to joining BMJ, Cheryl worked in publishing for over 20 years in Product Marketing and Product Management roles. Cheryl has worked in a number of different publishing areas including book, legal and financial for companies such as Penguin Putnam, American Lawyer and Thomson Financial. Cheryl has an MBA in Marketing from Fordham University and a BA in English Literature from the University of Michigan.

Kathleen P. Lyons


Kathy has been in publishing for 30 years, managing and developing society and proprietary journals and books in clinical medicine and the biomedical sciences. Prior to joining BMJ in 2017, she worked across a variety of STM publishers, including Nature Publishing Group, Springer, and Thieme.

Newly appointed in April 2020, Chris brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to BMJ from a very successful career in the publishing and learning sectors.

He was previously the CEO of the City & Guilds Group for 12 years, leading its transformation from an examinations board operating in the UK to a work-based learning company operating globally. During this time, the group made a number of acquisitions, most notably in digital learning.

Before joining City & Guilds Group, Chris held senior leadership positions in the US and UK with Harcourt Education and LexisNexis Group.

He is also Chair of the Activate Learning Group, a large further education college group in the Thames Valley.

Dr. Fiona Godlee

Editor in Chief, The BMJ & Editorial Director of BMJ company

Fi is The BMJ's 16th editor in chief and the first woman in the role. She is also Editorial Director of BMJ the company, responsible for ensuring the editorial integrity of all or our products and services.

She qualified as a doctor in 1985, trained as a general physician in Cambridge and London, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. She has written and lectured on a broad range of issues, including health and the environment, the ethics of academic publishing, evidence based medicine, access to clinical trial data, research integrity, open access publishing, patient partnership, conflict of interest, and overdiagnosis and overtreatment.

After joining The BMJ as an assistant editor in 1990, she moved in 2000 to help establish the open access publisher BioMedCentral as its founding Editorial Director for Medicine. In 2003 she returned to BMJ to lead its Knowledge division and was appointed Editor in Chief of The BMJ in March 2005. Fi is honorary professor at the Netherlands School for Primary Care Research (CaRe), honorary fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners, a senior visiting fellow at the Institute of Public Health at the University of Cambridge, and a by-fellow of King’s College Cambridge.

She is on the advisory or executive boards of the Health Improvement Studies (THIS) Institute, Alltrials, the Peer Review Congress, the International Forum for Quality and Safety and Healthcare, Evidence Live, Preventing Overdiagnosis, the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change and the Climate and Health Council.

She was a Harkness Fellow (1994-5), President of the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME) (1998-2000), Chair of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) (2003-5), and PPA Editor of the Year (2014). Fiona is co-editor of Peer Review in Health Sciences.

Alex Ritchie

Alex is responsible for all aspects of BMJ's finances and risk management, including international subsidiaries in the US, Chinese and Indian markets.
