Consultant in Respiratory Medicine
Applications are invited for the appointment of a full time Consultant in Respiratory Medicine with an interest in Severe Asthma. This is a replacement post, with the successful applicant joining a team already providing an established severe asthma service at Derriford Hospital. Our service is actively involved with the development of the Peninsula and South West severe asthma network.
The post holder will contribute to the continued development of the asthma and airways service, the care of an increasing number of patients on asthma biologics, and will increase capacity for review of new and follow-up complex airways patients. Duties will include dedicated time for asthma MDT meetings, biologic asthma clinics, severe/difficult asthma clinics, and supporting the airways Nursing team. Our Consultant team comprises of Dr Gemma Hayes, Dr Mitesh Patel and Dr Julian Lentaigne (Respiratory/ICU), with Dr Hayes having particular expertise in fungal lung disease + infection. The consultant team work closely with 4 respiratory nurses, who provide an in-reach service for patients admitted with airways disease. The nursing team also administer the biologic drugs and undertake nurse-led clinics for patients recently discharged from the Emergency Department with asthma. The asthma service prescribes and manages patients on biologic drugs for asthma, with all biologic decisions being taken in a dedicated MDT. At present, we have over 100 patients on biologic drugs, with a projected ongoing increase in numbers. The postholder will have a key role in contributing to all aspects of the service, and will join a cohesive and supportive team.
Derriford Hospital is a large teaching hospital with approximately 1000 beds and provides comprehensive acute services for a population of 435,000 and tertiary services for 1.5 million in the SouthWestPeninsula. The department of Respiratory Medicine is based in a dedicated Chest Clinic and is supported by a team of respiratory nurse specialists. Outpatient facilities are situated within the chest clinic where a fully equipped lung function laboratory is also sited. Inpatient care is provided on 2 wards both of which include a dedicated high care area for patients requiring non-invasive ventilation, intensive medical care, and step down care post ICU admission. Bronchoscopies are performed in a planned investigation unit. The department has strong links with the departments of radiology, thoracic surgery and oncology which are all based on the Derriford site.
Significant change has occurred in the respiratory department over the last few years and we are looking for a motivated individual to help develop the department further. With this increase in consultant number we plan to provide a more responsive respiratory service that meets the demands of the local community, prevents unnecessary hospital admissions, and provides the full range of sub-specialty expertise. The trust is committed to improving the patient pathway for those admitted acutely and this will allow a daily acute respiratory service for the trust, and help meet the growing respiratory workload. The successful applicant will be expected to take part in the General Medical on-call rota and should be on the Specialist Register for Respiratory and General Internal Medicine or be within 6 months of gaining their CCT at the time of interview.
