Job Details

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Respiratory consultant with an interest in COPD to join our diverse and successful team at Glenfield Hospital, helping to shape and lead our specialist services. This is a newly created post that have arisen through increased demands in our specialised out-patient services.

The UHL COPD Service based at Glenfield Hospital is a well-established service within the Respiratory Medicine, the Trust, and the East Midlands. Its strengths include:

Close links with both the Universities of Leicester and Loughborough. We host the NIHR Leicester Respiratory Biomedical Research Centre, the East Midlands Breathomics Pathology Node (EMBER), the national NIHR-EME BEAT Severe Asthma clinical trials program and are a core component of the Leicester Cancer Research UK Thoracic Oncology Centre. Respiratory Medicine also has a large teaching portfolio and the post holders will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate training.

We have a wide range of research in COPD with a focus on clinically relevant research. Current research interests include pulmonary rehabilitation, exacerbations, novel biological treatment, phenotyping of disease, skeletal muscle dysfunction, physical activity and diagnostic uncertainty.

We also support both quality improvement and research within the clinical setting. Prof Steiner is the current chair of the BTS QI specialist advisory group

Key tasks of the role include: (1) The post-exacerbation service, potentially incorporating a post-exacerbation clinic within the complex COPD clinic framework. (2) Integrated COPD care development including wider COPD MDT, community COPD upskilling and support, and virtual COPD clinics. (3) The Lung Volume Reduction (LVR) service. We wish to establish a more rapid regional “one-stop” referral service and increase the proportion of endobronchial interventions in the endoscopy suite

It is anticipated that the appointed physician would be supported in taking a lead in the development on any of these areas, depending on their preference. We are keen that the appointed physician will be part of quality improvement projects, audit and clinical research.
