Senior Clinical Fellow (Higher Level) in General Surgery

Anticipated Start Date: As soon as possible for a period of upto 12 months

Based at Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny, South East Wales


Applications are invited for a Senior Clinical Fellow in General Surgery commencing as soon as possible for 12 months initially with possible view to extension for a further 12 months, subject to satisfactory formal assessment.

This post provides both clinical and non-clinical support, experience and enhancement of Clinical Fellows in their pursuit of either obtaining a National Training Number (NTN) or career development through Article 14 routes toward CCT. A named educational supervisor is assigned at the start of post together with a clinical supervisor to oversee day-to-day duties. The post includes regular formal and informal feedback and appraisal. For the 2014-2015 cohort at our unit we have had both of our doctors (100%) whom applied for a NTN post this year being not only successful in obtaining an NTN post, but also their first choice of deanery. We are also extremely receptive to candidates requiring support to their training needs working through the Article 14 route toward CCT.

Clinically, there are opportunities for both elective and emergency General Surgery (Colorectal, Upper GI, Breast), as well as Endoscopy. A monthly clinical commitment rota ensures equal training opportunity is provided within the registrar team, this together with the friendly team orientated atmosphere providing flexibility for extra training opportunity. There is 1:9 acute on call commitment within an extremely supportive consultant body ensuring training and development in managing a wide range of surgical patients. Clinic opportunity provides enhancement of knowledge and experience in managing both simple and complex surgical patients. Rotations of clinical supervisors will be on a 6 monthly basis to enhance exposure to a variety of clinical training experiences.

Academically, there are opportunities for full supervision in undertaking audits, projects, set-up trials and conduct research. Successful candidates will be encouraged and expected to undertake work with a view to both publish and present during the term of the appointment. The hospital benefits from a free Wifi service enabling academic work to be technologically assisted whilst on site. There is excellent Postgraduate medical facilities available for study and development.

There is opportunity to develop teaching skills through liaison with the post-graduate education department with a pool of foundation doctors and medical students keen to learn and gain exposure to skills & knowledge within General Surgery. A weekly teaching program is provided locally within the surgical department as well as providing a Journal club forum to appraise papers. Candidates are also encouraged to take on managerial projects serving to improve service provision within the trust.

The Department is currently staffed by 8 Consultants, 3 Specialist Training Registrars, 4 Clinical Fellow Registrars, 2 Specialty doctors, 8 Foundation Doctors, 4 Senior Nurse Practitioners and 1 Surgical Care Practitioner. 

Whilst the post will not have recognised educational approval, it will have the same supervision, study leave and annual leave as that of a recognised training post. 

This position involves Regulated Activity with children and adults as defined by the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012) and the following checks will be undertaken following any conditional offer:

  • Enhanced check with barred list information, including   
  • - an adults and children’s barred list check
