Do you want to be part of the team transforming major trauma patient care and outcomes?

Are you looking to develop your skills in a busy and dynamic specialist centre with a view to creating a highly skilled network across a South Wales?

University Hospital of Wales will become the first Major Trauma Centre to launch within Wales in 2020. It will play a key role in leading the way in delivering specialist trauma care.  The Major Trauma Centre is part of an inclusive and collaborative South West and Mid Wales Trauma Network spanning 6 health board areas and there will be opportunities for the post holder to work flexibly across the network.

The development of the Major Trauma Centre and Trauma Network seeks to enhance patient clinical and functional outcomes (across the whole pathway from prevention to rehabilitation and on-going care), in addition to improving the experience of patients, their families and staff across the Network.   To achieve this we need dedicated, enthusiastic and experienced health care professionals to join this exciting new network.

As this development is part of a wider regional network there will be an opportunity for joint appointments or rotations with neighbouring Health Boards.

Applications are invited for several new Consultant posts in Emergency Medicine based at University Hospital of Wales (UHW), Cardiff. We are looking to expand our Consultant numbers with the appointment of motivated and enthusiastic Emergency Physicians to join our established multi-professional team at an exciting time as we prepare the Emergency Unit to be the front door for the Major Trauma Centre of the South Wales Major Trauma Network. This represents an excellent opportunity to join a team committed to delivering high quality compassionate emergency care.

The Emergency Unit at the University Hospital of Wales provides comprehensive emergency medicine services for adult and paediatric patients from across Cardiff and Vale in addition to a number of regionalised specialties within the Network. The department sees 140,000 new patients per annum of which 40,000 are paediatric. There is a 7-bedded resuscitation room, 16 beds in the majors area, an ambulatory area with a high turnover of patients and a minor injuries unit which is run by Emergency Nurse Practitioners.  Children presenting with illness or injury are cared for in the co-located Paediatric Emergency Department.

The team at UHW are progressive and active in quality improvement, innovation, research and medical education. Appointees will be encouraged to maintain or develop an area of special interest. The Emergency Unit has close links with the Cardiff Medical School and plays a key role in undergraduate education; we also work with the Postgraduate Department and Health Education and Improvement Wales to ensure a good training environment for our junior doctors. There are excellent opportunities for research and academic interests.

Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.
