General and Acute Medical Physicians with a sub-acute speciality – (2.0 FTE)

Whangarei Hospital, Northland, New Zealand

An exciting opportunity for energetic, enthusiastic General and Acute Physician, with any sub-speciality interest considered, is currently available at Northland DHB.

Whangarei Hospital is the largest hospital in Northland, providing secondary care services for the region supported by three growing district hospitals. Northland offers the opportunity to work with a growing and diverse population. Our focus is on improving equity against a background of high needs and challenging clinical issues. There are opportunities to work within the outlying community hospitals as well as leadership opportunities to develop key local services to improve the medical outcomes for the people of Northland.

The service has a coronary care unit with five beds, three medical wards with 68 beds and a spacious outpatient facility. The hospital prides itself on having a supportive collegial atmosphere with great rapport across specialities and services. The acute Medical service works closely with the Emergency Department teams in all Northland hospitals to provide acute care to those presenting acutely to hospital. You would be joining a team of 16 physicians who work across both Acute Medicine and subspecialty ambulatory services.

Northland covers an area of 12,600 square kilometres and has a population of over 170,000. Working in this high clinical need environment is offset by slow paced relaxation with breath-taking scenic coastal areas and exciting recreational activities.

Excellent schools, affordable housing and numerous preschool facilities abound. A well-developed Town Basin offers walks; exercise and child play beside an attractive marina with many restaurants and coffee shops to enjoy. Auckland city is just a two hour drive away.

All applicants MUST be eligible to register in New Zealand as a Medical Practitioner, and preferably have current specialist vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

For more information on the position, in the first instance please contact Dr Lucille Wilkinson, Clinical Director Department of Medicine, Northland District Health Board, who will arrange to have a conversation about the role and what we have available in the North.
