Directorate of Laboratory Medicine

Applications are invited for a whole-time Consultant Histopathologist for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the developing South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology.

It is expected to be an oligo-specialist post structured to contribute to Urological Pathology, Endocrine Pathology and Dermatopathology. Other areas of subspecialist practice possible subject to department needs and interests of the candidate.

The successful appointee would be expected to actively contribute reporting cytology material within the relevant subspecialist areas. The appointee would be expected to actively engage with training of histopathology trainees, and the support and supervision of biomedical scientists / expert practitioners (e.g. in cut-up). Since 2013, the intraoperative frozen sections service is provided using digital pathology platform and the applicant will be expected to endorse this mode of service delivery. There is no expectation that the appointee would undertake autopsy practice- this is however an option as an independent arrangement with HM Coroner.  The department is committed to lean working, and the appropriate use of technology – including digital pathology in due course – is required.

The successful candidate is required to actively contribute to the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Transformation Programme. The Programme, endorsed by SYB Integrated Care System, was set-up in 2018 by the partner Trusts Barnsley Hospital NHS FT, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS FT, Sheffield Children’s Hospital NHS FT, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS FT and The Rotherham Hospital NSH FT to respond effectively to the major integration drivers within the NHS and the region. Our vision to “improve lives and safeguard best clinical outcomes by delivering high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions”.

Should any further vacancies arise within the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology, shortlisted candidates will be considered.

The successful candidate must be registered with the GMC with a valid licence to practise. For further information please visit the GMC website and click on the Registration and Licensing link. The candidate will also have completed Specialist Training (or equivalent) and be entered on the Specialist Register of the GMC, or have a CCT date within six months of the date of interview.

The appointee will be expected to take part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer status will be granted by the University of Sheffield. Research is encouraged and full facilities are available.

Applications from those unable, for personal reasons, to work on a whole-time basis or a job share basis will be considered.
